Subplot - Backyard Home Prototype

Developed through the City of Edmonton’s standardized infill design initiative, Subplot reimagines the backyard suite as a complete, independent home. The project combines the efficiencies of a repeatable, permit-ready design with the spatial quality, character, and attention to detail of custom residential architecture.

Rather than placing a dwelling above a garage, Subplot brings living spaces to the ground level, connecting them directly to the yard, with bedrooms located above. This compact two-storey arrangement creates a stronger relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces while establishing a distinct identity within the larger property.

A flexible architectural framework allows for personalization through material, colour, and interior finish options without compromising the clarity or efficiency of the design.

Subplot demonstrates how thoughtful, design-led infill can contribute to more diverse housing options in established neighbourhoods, offering a home that is efficient to build, adaptable over time, and desirable to live in.
